Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on a great night in the Champions League but admits more has to be done if Spurs want to be on the next level.
Spurs overcame German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate to progress into the last eight of the Champions League and as usual, Pochettino was in a pragmatic mood.
“It was fantastic, job done,” Pochettino said. “It was a massive game for us, very tough, but I feel very proud.
“We fully deserved this. We scored four goals, did not concede, and this was against a team that is top of the Bundesliga with great players.
“We suffered a bit in the first half. We conceded more chances than we expected, but that is football. They had nothing to lose and were taking a lot of risks.
“The mentality was good and I’m so happy for the players and the fans. It is so important to be in the quarter-final, but you need to show more if you want to be at the next level.”
A lot will depend on the draw for the quarter-finals, a draw against the likes of Barcelona, Man City or PSG, if all qualify as expected, would be extremely hard, however, a draw against Ajax, Porto or Roma and an easier task awaits, though as Ajax showed last night against Real Madrid, nothing can be taken for granted.
Point is, that Spurs could make the semi-finals depending on the luck of the draw but it is when they get to those sort of heights that they falter and claims of bottling it come to the fore.
Spurs are mentally fragile at the deep end of competitions and that is what Pochettino has to address, do that and they will be on that next level.
