Manchester United suffered their first domestic defeat since Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer took over at the Emirates yesterday when they went down 2-0 to Arsenal but assistant manager Mike Phelan is not unduly concerned, in fact, he is taking positives from it.
It was always unlikely that United would go the rest of the season unbeaten and speaking after the game Phelan said,
“Thanks for your support today, in the ground, watching [on] TV and on social media.
“In victory we deserve it. In defeat we need it. We go again.”
And he is probably right, United did need to taste defeat so that they could reignite their hunger, no doubt they were still highly motivated but when you go so long without defeat complacency can set in and it is not always a bad thing to get a little boot up the backside.
Arsenal now occupy the fourth spot, one point behind third-placed Tottenham, United are only two points behind the Gunners and Chelsea one point further back in sixth place, any of those four clubs can still take the final two spots to qualify for the Champions League next season and all four can still qualify via the European competitions they are still participating in.
Going to be a hell of an end to the season.
