It has been reported consistently this season that Manchester United want to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and the latest comments from the Belgian international are being seen as more evidence that he will be signing for the Red Devils in the summer.
It has to be said that when transfer targets make comments that those comments can be interpreted in many different ways and that probably applies to what Alderweireld has said.
“There’s a lot to play for this season. And in the end I have a year contract left at Spurs, so I don’t look further than this season,” he told Sky Sports.
“Other things I don’t know. I am very happy at Spurs, so we will see what the future brings.
“I still feel very fit. I think I played a lot of minutes this season so I showed that I am fit – I don’t feel 30, I feel younger.
“So as I said, I am very happy and I just try to watch game-by-game. This season there is a lot to play for so I will give my best for that.”
OK, Alderweireld did focus on “this season” but he also said that he is happy at Spurs, so his comments can be taken either way but it is noticeable that he did not deny that he would be leaving North London and in reality his comments are standard when a player is seriously considering his future.
Tottenham triggered a clause in the contract of Alderweireld to keep him at the club until 2020, however, that also activated a £26 Million release clause that will come into effect this summer.
It is looking increasingly likely that the defender will be leaving White Hart Lane and most probably to Manchester United.
