It is being reported in Italy that Roma is plotting an audacious double swoop on Chelsea this summer.
Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera are claiming that the Serie A giants want to take both Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri and on-loan striker Gonzalo Higuain back to Italy.
Roma apparently sees Sarri as a long-term option following the sacking of Eusebio di Francesco and are also reported to be very keen on Gonzalo Higuain in the event that Chelsea decline to make the Argentines loan permanent.
To some degree, this news is not the end of the world for Chelsea, there is a huge question mark over the future of Sarri and there is no guarantee that they would have converted Higuain’s loan into a permanent deal.
That said, the impending transfer ban may well change things significantly, if they cannot sign new players then there is a chance they will keep hold of Higuain and they know it will be hard to attract a high profile manager if they sack Sarri, what manager will want to take on the Chelsea project unable to sign new players knowing that lack of immediate success tends to result in a sacking?
It is a brazen move by Roma and will be interesting to see if they push ahead with this plan.
