Chelsea has begun making plans for next season and have opened talks with Napoli star, Dries Mertens
Mertens will become a free agent next summer and several other teams have been looking to sign him this month. However, Chelsea is looking to beat all interested parties to his signature, according to the media.
Frank Lampard has seen his young squad struggle this season and they are at risk of finishing outside the top four if things don’t change for them.
He has relied on Tammy Abraham for the goals this season, but the England international has struggled at times and it has affected the Blues who have no reliable substitute for him.
Mertens has scored over 100 goals for Napoli since he joined them in 2014. Now, he looks set to run down his current deal at the San Paolo.
Mertens is just one of many attackers who have been linked with moves to Chelsea this month.
The likes of Jadon Sancho, Thomas Lemar, and Moussa Dembele have also been rumoured to be targets of Chelsea.
But Mertens is the most experienced and he would come to Stamford Bridge relatively cheaper than most of them.
Chelsea couldn’t bring in reinforcement over the summer because they were banned. However, they managed to keep Callum Hudson Odoi and brought in Christian Pulisic but their inconsistency this season has shown the Blues why they need to sign an experienced attacker.
