Arsenal open talks over long term target but face stiff competition

Arsenal has to strengthen in the summer following a disappointing season in the Premier League and one area that needs a lot of work is their defence.

That is why they have been targeting Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti and according to the latest reports, have opened up talks with the Spanish Champions over a possible transfer.

But they are not the only club keen on signing the 25-year-old, Italian Champions Juventus are reportedly also very interested and will provide stiff competition in the race to secure the France international’s signature.

Umtiti, however, does not want to leave Barca, he wants to stay and fight for his place but it seems that the current management prefers Clement Lenglet and are open to selling Umtiti providing a suitable offer is tabled.

And even if there is a change of management at Barcelona, which is very possible, the chances of Umtiti forcing his way back into the reckoning are low, especially with the expected arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax.

Arsenal has a great opportunity here to sign a decent defender that will shore up their porous defence but it will not be easy and they will have to outbid Juventus in the process.
