Arsenal facing tough competition in battle to sign quality midfielder

The battle to sign Manchester United’s Ander Herrera is really starting to heat up with Athletico Bilbao the latest club to throw their hat into the ring.

Herrera will become a free agent if no contract extension is agreed with United and Arsenal, along with French giants Paris St Germain, have already been linked with the 29-year-old and you can now add the midfielders former club to the ever-growing list of suitors.

Bilbao’s President Aitor Elezegi, has been speaking about the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur forward Fernando Llorente and Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez returning to the club telling AS,

‘Any of those three could play in the team, Athletic has the ability to go through with these type of transfers.

‘I hope Javi, Herrera or Llorente would like to make the effort, which would be a generous one.’

Herrera himself has said that he remains focused on football in the time that remains in the season and that it is up to his agent to sort out a contract renewal with United or to find him another club.

Arsenal remain firmly in the race, they would no doubt love to sign a United player on a free transfer but more than that, Herrera would be the perfect replacement for Aaron Ramsey who is on his way to Juventus in the summer.

PSG is probably an unlikely destination because they will be unable to guarantee regular first team football and it is far from certain that Herrera is ready to return home just yet.

All things considered, the competition is tough but the Gunners must feel secretly confident they will prevail in the end.
